The Friendship Place in New Britain, Connecticut
|
For my job shadow I had spent the day with Mary-Ann, who is a leader at The Friendship Place homeless shelter in Bristol. One part that i found was more interesting was the hands-on interacting with the families themselves. Mary-Ann seemed to know everyone who we interacted with along with all of their children if they had them as well. Everyone seemed so happy to see her as well, knowing they were in good hands. One of the more less interesting parts of the day was mostly paperwork, and some individuals who had an attitude. I can see how if i worked with the homeless 24/7, I would be nervous as people could potentially have weapons or drugs on them. When it comes to school, she has a bachelors in Social Work and had gone to school for 4 years at Central Connecticut State University.
After having this an an experience, I don't believe this is something I would like to further pursue. I still enjoy helping people, but being this far out directly into the field is a bit much for me. I'll continue to look, but at least I can cross this off my list. |
