Dear Mrs. Boutilier:
My capstone project is providing a local group of homeless with new pairs of socks at the First Lutheran church in New Britain near the end of February. I have placed specially located collection bins for people to donate easily. I have also set up a fundraiser thorough my local Chipotle to raise money for the buying of more socks as well. I have been working with the First Lutheran church in Franklin square New Britain CT by helping out and seeing the needs first hand by attending the church’s very own pasta dinner on Wednesday nights. Here they provide salads, pasta and desserts donated from the nearby Panera bread.
My research question is: What are common misconceptions of homelessness and what can be done to change it. I chose this as my research question because I see people like these all the time. I have always helped out at my local church and I see them all around Hartford and other major cities. I had seen first-hand what happens when you have no socks and spend your days walking from place to place. Socks are the number one requested item at shelters but the least donated. This research question will allow me to further my knowledge for the needs of the homeless. I am collecting multiple artifacts to document my project with files such as emails from my mentor and pictures of the collection and distribution.
My mentor is Jennifer Olszyk. I have known Jenn for as long as I can remember as she had gone to my church since I was a small child. Jenn is qualified because she has been working with multiple community organizations and other church events. Herself personally has been through Uganda and Guatamala multiple times on mission trips. This project will push me out of my comfort zone and further my learning stretch will be coming in close contact with the individuals who are homeless. I sincerely enjoy helping people who need it, although I have never been able to directly help as I feel uncomfortable around other people due to the cleanliness of these areas.
